Synopsis
The Elves and the Shoemaker
An old shoemaker and his wife have run out of money just before Christmas. They can't afford food or clothing, let alone gifts for each other. The old shoemaker cuts out the last bit of leather he has for shoes to sell, then goes to bed. During the night, elves come and magically sew the shoes, decorating them with gold thread and diamond buttons. In the morning, the shoemaker and his wife are suprised and elated. The shoemaker sells the shoes to the duchess for her daughter and has enough money to buy more leather. Better still, the duchess wants fine boots made for the duke. The shoemaker laments to his wife that he has no gold thread or diamond buttons. His wife instructs him to cut out the leather as he did the night before. He does so and they both hide to see what happens. Again the elves appear and fashion boots magically. The shoemaker and his wife are grateful for the gift, yet realize they must give a gift in return. The elves had no clothes for themselves, so the shoemaker and his wife fashion clothes for them and leave them out for the elves. The elves appear again, and are ecstatic over their new clothes. The satisfied shoemaker and his wife welcome in Christmas morning together. The elves never come back to the shoemaker's cottage again.
